Statement
Through sculpture, I explore how memory, emotion, the passage of time, and absent or lost presences—things that cannot be seen, touched, and are constantly slipping away—might be given a temporary physical form.
Material
My primary material is terracotta, a medium that takes shape through touch and is fixed through firing. Even after firing, however, it remains fragile and susceptible to breakage.
The traces left on the clay surface, the repetitions and variations created through molding, and the missing or hollowed-out sections of the work all reflect the incompleteness and instability inherent in memory.
Process
I often wrap my sculptures in cloth or cotton.
The act of wrapping is both protective and concealing. In covering something to preserve it from being lost, its presence paradoxically becomes hidden from view.
I am interested in the ambiguous state that exists between touch and separation, between preserving and losing.
